Does “Green” for the Environment mean “Green” for People? 

The greening of America over the past decade has created a frenzy among consumers to equip homes with everything from compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) to dimmer switches to home-based solar power.” At the same time, manufacturers and companies are in an ever-constant race to produce newer, better, bigger, faster electronics, TV’s and wireless technologies and consumers are constantly stocking their homes with more and more of these products. Electronics in the home is exploding at a dizzying rate! 

But what are all these electronics and green technologies doing to your health? 

In the past two decades 19 diseases have quietly exploded in theUSwith no clear explanation.  Breast cancer, prostate cancer, melanoma, brain cancer and various other cancers are rising dramatically.  Strokes and heart attacks in children and adults under the age of 45 are skyrocketing. Alzheimer’s, relatively unknown 20 years ago, is now commonplace.  Diabetes and a bevy of seemingly rare neurological diseases are increasing exponentially. ADD and ADHD have quadrupled among children. A recent study concludes 25% of children under-18 are taking prescriptions drugs!  

In August 2010, Dr. Sam Milham released a book chronicling 30 years of research in the harmful effects of EMF. In his book, “Dirty Electricity: Electrification and the Diseases of Civilization.”  Few noticed.  After nearly thirty years researching electromagnetic fields (EMF) impacts on health, Milham convincingly links an almost unknown form of electromagnetic fields (EMF) called “Dirty Electricity” to what he calls the “diseases of civilization”:

  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Cancer
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Diabetes
  • Depression

 Dirty Electricity (DE) is a newly recognized and ubiquitous pollutant that refers to unusable electrical energy and frequencies, which produce spikes and surges that flow along and through electrical power lines.  DE results from electrical interference caused by the dramatic increase of electronics, computers and a number of ‘green,’ energy-saving technologies like dimmer switches, solar power, and high-efficiency lighting.  Dirty electricity can be found in homes, schools, workplaces, shopping areas, and restaurants – wherever there are electronics plugged-in and/or the presence of many green technologies.  

The numbers speak for themselves. Milham’s work evaluates the correlation between the incidence of disease and the electrification of Americain the 20th century. In the 1920s when New Yorkers and other urban states had nearly 96% electricity coverage, states likeArkansas andMississippi were well below 50% penetrated, especially in rural areas.  Milham found evidence that cancer; heart disease; and diabetes were rampant in the ‘electrified’ states, but nearly absent in the mostly rural, non-electrified group. For many years it was thought that the ‘magnetic’ field associated with electricity was the culprit. A number of studies in the 1970s and 1980s correlated magnetic fields to leukemia and other cancers and causedRussia to establish limits and the World Health Organization to issue guidelines about exposures to magnetic fields.  But in a landmark study of a cancer cluster at La Quinta Middle School inCalifornia, Dr. Milham and Lloyd Morgan found that high levels of ‘Dirty Electricity’ strongly correlated to the cancer victims, not magnetic fields. According to Milham and Morgan, “the attributable risk of cancer associated with this exposure [dirty electricity] was 64%. A single year of employment at this school increased a teacher’s cancer risk by 21%.”

Other scientists like Dr.Magda Havas, PhD have also linked dirty electricity with diabetes. She also finds a connection to a number of other growing illnesses and afflictions such as 

  • ADD/ ADHD
  • Asthma
  • Sleep issues
  • Concentration
  • Learning

Dr. Havas has studied the near term health and behavioral impacts of dirty electricity in classrooms inWisconsin,CanadaandMinnesota. Among Her findings in classroom settings where dirty electricity was reduced and reintroduced student behavior and learning improved during reduced exposures in 11 out of 13 categories by as much as 22%. 

Asthma 

In another school inWisconsin, the school nurse noticed that after installing Dirty Electricity filters in the school, out of 37 children previously needing inhalers for Asthma, only 3 still required the devices. 

Diabetes and High Blood Sugar 

In two separate papers, Havas also found that diabetics saw a decrease in levels of blood sugar when Dirty Electricity was reduced in their environment. 

Sleep, Mood, Attitude and Energy 

Meanwhile, teachers who helped administer surveys for Dr. Havas’ studies at the Willow School near Toronto, Canada found that they experienced less fatigue (46%); 42% were less frustrated; 35% were more satisfied with their work; 35% had a greater sense of well-being; 27% were less irritable; 23% had more energy; 23% experienced less body pain; and 19% had fewer headaches when Dirty Electricity was filtered from the classroom. 

Green Irony 

Dirty Electricity is often caused by consumers pursuing environmentally-responsible actions like installing efficiency lighting, solar power and dimmer switches. But it’s becoming increasingly clear that what’s green for the environment may not be green for people. 

One way to reduce the harmful effects is to unplug all the devices and lights causing the potentially unhealthy dirty energy.  But the most effective way to mitigate the harmful effects is to filter the unusable frequencies and greatly reduce your exposures by using plug-in filters.
